Position Summary
The Dock Manager is responsible for managing the safe, efficient, and courteous operation of the Upper and Lower Loading Docks at the Baird Convention Center. This role is essential to event logistics, ensuring smooth vehicle access, vendor coordination, and safety compliance during event setup and breakdown. The Dock Manager works very closely with the Wisconsin Center District Public Safety Division and event staff to maintain a secure and organized environment at both docks.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish contact with the Event Manager at the start of each shift to confirm event schedules, dock assignments, and special instructions.
- Oversee access control and dock operations at both the Upper and Lower Docks, ensuring only authorized vehicles with valid passes are allowed entry.
- Greet all arriving vendors and verify their event affiliation before directing them to assigned dock spaces.
- Enforce a strict 15-minute time limit for temporary unloading/loading, with entry from the North side and exit through the South side.
- Maintain clear and continuous communication with Public Safety Security Control and Event Management via two-way radio throughout the shift.
- Ensure all temporary loading/unloading vehicles use hazard lights while on ramps.
- Monitor traffic flow and prevent unauthorized vehicle use, reporting violations or safety issues immediately.
- Routinely patrol both dock areas to ensure vendor progress, safety, and traffic compliance.
- Interact professionally and frequently with the Wisconsin Center District Public Safety Division to coordinate access, security response, and incident reporting.
- Notify Security Command before leaving the post for any reason.
Qualifications
- Prior experience in dock operations, traffic control, or security is required.
- Experience using two-way radios for professional communication.
- Ability to work closely and effectively with public safety personnel and event operations staff.
- Strong verbal communication, situational awareness, and customer service skills.
- Capable of standing and walking for extended periods and working in outdoor weather conditions.
- Must be reliable, punctual, and able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays based on event schedules.
Work Environment
- High-traffic event venue with both indoor and outdoor responsibilities.
- Requires coordination with vendors, event crews, contractors, and Public Safety personnel.
- Active role with significant walking, standing, and communication in varying weather conditions.
